food & climbing

It’s been an interesting week. I’ve been ignoring a injury to my shoulder and it kept getting worse and worse, to the point where I could no longer climb. This meant that Saturday’s trip to Gold Bar was going to be one where I do no climbing and just hike the 2 steep miles with all of my gear to take photos.

While this wasn’t my favorite idea, I really wanted the photos, and I was fairy certain that i wasn’t going to get anything good from sitting at home all weekend.

I was right. Nothing good was going to come out of this.

Gold Bar it was.

In the meantime, I figure it would be good to practice my food photography skills. For her birthday, I got my wife some plates from a friend of ours, who is an excellent potter. I mentioned before that I am not fully satisfied with the tone of my food photos, but maybe these vibrantly colored plates can help.

I think I was right. The first one, on thursday, wasn’t that good because I didn’t have time to set up the lighting how I wanted to, but the steak photo, I think, came out pretty great.

And then it was Saturday. I packed up my lights, a couple stands, a shoot through umbrella and off we went, up the steep dirt road in hopes of getting some photos.

The first thing we hiked out to was Josh’s project Equinox. Fortunately for me he didn’t flash it, so I actually had a chance to set up my lights and make adjustments until the light was just how I wanted it.

Well, almost how I wanted it. It was crazy windy and you can imagine that a 6 foot umbrella is a bit of a sail. I had to improvise and build a little burial mound on top of my stand to keep it from blowing away.

Even with that pile of boulders on the stand, the light almost blew away a couple times.

I can honestly say that I never expected these photos to look as good as they did. That umbrella-monolight combination is my new favorite thing and I’m going to have to bring it with me everywhere I can. Here’s hoping to good weather in Leavenworth next weekend!
